Shriners Hospitals for Children—Philadelphia
**Written by Stephanie Byrwa, Marketing & Communications Manager**
Shriners Hospitals for Children provides specialty care to the Philadelphia community and beyond. We are a non-profit hospital caring for children for over 90 years with routine and rare orthopaedic conditions, including fractures, sports injuries and spinal cord injuries. We offer surgical, non-surgical and rehabilitative services using advanced technology.
Parents and caregivers will travel any distance to get the care they want and need for their child. It doesn’t matter the distance. Planes, trains and automobiles might be included to get to the end destination. When caring for a child that has special needs it is not always feasible to constantly fly commercial airplanes to Philadelphia. That is when Angel Flight East (AFE) swoops in; our families will work together with the AFE team to arrange for travel to be able to receive the care they need. Traveling for healthcare should not be a burden on families. The biggest concern should be getting the appointment to be seen, not how are they going to afford to fly multiple times within a short period. In 2018, the Philadelphia Hospital provided care to patients from 49 of the 50 states and 55 different countries. Some of those flights within the US wouldn’t have been possible without AFE.
The Philadelphia Shriners Hospital practices family-centered care that embraces the whole family. Parents and caregivers are brought into the care team from the beginning and have resources available ranging from social and psychological services to support groups and patient care education. We strive to support families in their natural caregiving roles by building upon their unique strengths, recognizing their individuality and respecting their different methods of coping. The collaboration and expertise of the staff with patients and families enables the team to devise a treatment plan that will provide optimal healing and recovery. Outcomes are maximized as patients receive most, if not all, services right here at the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital.
